Vaping to be Fully Legalised in New Zealand

Talking about Vaping on ThoseGamers, What is this madness? You say. Well there is Tech inside a Vaping mod and I myself am a Vaper and this announcement I just couldn’t not post. Vaping is growing rapidly not just in New Zealand but around the world, however Government policy around the world has struggled to keep up and has been divisive in many countries. The UK was one of the first Government’s to side with the majority of research to suggest that e-cigarettes are around 95% safer than smoking. The US however, has kind of gone the opposite way (no doubt on the back of big Tobacco lobbyists) with the Surgeon General looking to limit Vaping as much as possible and put heavy restrictions on the Vaping industry that could effectively shut the industry down and see people go back to smoking cigarettes.

Enter the New Zealand Government and the Ministry of Health who, since mid 2016 had been considering their position on Vaping which was in legal limbo. Vaping had not technically been legal yet at the same time wasn’t entirely illegal. You see, Vaping on ejuice that contained Nicotine was not allowed to be sold by New Zealand retailers, but there was a loophole that consumers could buy Nictone ejuice “for personal use” which meant individuals could buy juice containing Nicotine from Overseas and import it without a problem. Retailers managed to sell Nicotine juice by not advertising it, therefore when someone asked for it retailers can assume it is for personal use. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating people take up Vaping on Nicotine juice because Nicotine is a highly addictive substance BUT and I can attest to this as can many others, Vaping has helped me STOP smoking and whilst I still Vape on ejuice containing Nicotine, I no longer smoke Cigarettes thus am no longer filling my body with the 1000+ harmful chemicals that are in a ciggy.

Anyway, back to the point here. This week the New Zealand Government announced that it would be legalising Vaping in New Zealand. In making the announcement, Associate Health Minister Nicky Wagner acknowledged research was still ongoing into the health effects of Vaping but acknowledged the belief that Vaping is a safer alternative, “Around the world we can’t get clear research about this. But what we’re thinking is they are about 95 per cent less harmful than cigarettes.”

New Zealand’s approach to the industry should be praised as it will now offer an alternative path for people wanting to get off cigarettes and help with the Government’s goal to be SmokeFree by 2025. Vaping will still be restricted to people 18 and over and advertising on TV, Radio and Billboards will be banned (and so it should) and Vaping indoors in public places will also be made illegal. Aside from those restrictions Vaping will have much more freedom with selling of products being allowed in most places that sell tobacco such as Supermarkets, Dairy’s and Petrol Stations plus the dedicated Vaping Retailers AND the products can be on full display to the public in the normal packaging (no plain packaging required). On top of that the taxes that apply to Tobacco will not apply to eliquids so prices should remain relatively low and may even drop slightly as more suppliers can sell their products which will create greater competition.

The law is set to come into effect some time in 2018 and it’s worth noting that given it’s an election year, if a new Government is put in place they may look to change to rules but for now Vapors can savour this victory and keep Vaping on with the Status Quo knowing that next year, New Zealand will become one of the countries to fully support Vaping and providing a pathway to help people stop smoking.
